There are many differences between these two treatments, one being that the creators of True Detective didn't include an marketing strategy. I think that this is because although video games were popular in 1996, they weren't nearly as popular as television shows are/were in 2014 ; so not is a given that marketing will play a part in the creation of the product. When they were pitching Diablo, they needed to make it clear how it was going to differ from other video games and how they were going to draw people in to their product.
